RUG2010 TMG Project
A Primer for The Master Genealogist by Terry Reigel
The ROOTS Users Group of Arlington is working
with a copy of the Sample project as we go through each chapter of the book,
A Primer for The Master Genealogist, written by Terry Reigel.
If you do not have this book, you may purchase it at the
Wholly Genes website, specifically
here.
Working Copies of the RUG2010 Project file
We will make a practice of uploading the latest modified version
of RUG2010 as we expand the project database when we go through the chapters of
Terry's book after the appropriate RUG meeting describing that chapter.
You may download any working Backup copy of the RUG2010 Project file by simply clicking
on the appropriate link below. Working copies are stored as TMG project Backup files (.sqz files).
To load the working Backup copy for a particular month into TMG, perform the following steps:
- Depending upon your browser, when you click on a link in the above list, ...
- In MS Internet Explorer, you will be asked if you want to open the file or save the file;
select "Save File".
- In Firefox, select "Save File" in the pop-up window; the file will be placed in the folder you
had selected as the default for downloaded files. It does not remind you where that folder is.
- In Google Chrome, click on the file box (at the bottom of the window), select "Show in Folder"
and you'll get a Windows Explorer view of the folder you identified as the default for the browser
to place downloaded files.
- In Opera, in the downloading pop-up window, select "Save"; this opens a Windows Explorer window
showing the contents of the folder you had selected as the default for downloaded files.
- Sometimes the .sqz filename extension is changed to .zip
If this happens to you, simply change the name of the file back to .sqz because
that is what TMG expects the extension name of a backup file to have.
- Then copy the .sqz file from the folder where that file was downloaded on your computer
(in the above step) into the folder in which you have selected for backups.
If you have used the default installation of TMG, that folder is
"C:\My Documents\The Master Genealogist v7\Backups".
- It really doesn't matter where you copy the file to, but you need to remember
where you copied it to. One suggestion is to copy it to your Desktop.
- Remember the directory where you copy this file to.
- Start TMG.
- Click on the "Restore..." button.
- TMG will display the contents of the "Backups" folder.
- If you didn't copy the .sqz file to TMG's Backups folder, then
navigate to the folder where you have downloaded it.
- Eventually, you should see the name of the backup file you downloaded.
- It should be of the form "RUG2010-nn.sqz" where 'nn' is the chapter number
that the RUG has gone through and after which the backup was created.
- Click on the backup file that you would like to restore (e.g., RUG2010-01.sqz) and then
click on the "Open" button.
- Then restore the backup using TMG's Restore Wizard. You will go through several
windows using the Restore Wizard.
- Step 1: Restore Type — There are three possible choices here:
RESTORE ALL (project + customizations), RESTORE CUSTOMIZATIONS, and RESTORE PROJECT.
Usually, you just want the RUG2010 Project (click on "RESTORE PROJECT") but you may
click on any of the three.
Then click on the "Next >" button.
- Step 2: Data — If the full pathname to your backup file is not correct in the
"Backup file:" line, then click on the button with "..." and navigate to your backup file.
The pathname in the "Restore project to this folder:" line should be correct, something
similar to
C:\Documents and Settings\you\My Documents\The Master Genealogist v7\Projects\.
Generally, you should click the check-box marked "Use the default path for external exhibits".
Then click on the "Next >" button.
At this point, you may see a small window with the warning text
"You're trying to restore a backup over your existing data!
Are you sure that you want to continue?" and two buttons: 'Yes' and 'No'.
Click on the 'Yes' button.
- Step 3: Data — You should click both check-boxes. They both are marked with
text that begins "Use the default path for ...".
Then click on the "Next >" button.
- Step 4: Options — The four check-boxes underneath "Project items:" are checked;
these boxes are "Project data files" (and "External exhibits"), "Accents", and "Filters".
Usually, you can keep them checked.
Then click on the "Next >" button.
- Step 5: Finish — Click on the "Finish" button.
Two progress bars will then be displayed in the "Step 5: Finish" window.
When everything is restored, a small information window appears in the middle of the screen
with "Restore finished" in it. Click on the 'OK' button.
- TMG then loads its databases and your layout will be displayed.
You are now ready to work with the version associated with the corresponding Chapter of Terry's book.
Creating the Initial RUG2010 TMG Project
To initially create your own RUG2010 TMG Project from the Sample Project, follow these steps:
- When you first start TMG, it doesn't matter which button you click on to load a project, but you can click on "Sample".
- When that project is loaded, execute File, Close Project (because the project we will copy must be closed).
- Then execute File, Copy Project.
- In the sub-window labeled "Select a Project to Copy", you will see some of your own projects plus the "Sample" folder. Double-click on the "Sample" folder (or click on it and then click the "Open" button). In the "Sample" folder is a file "sample__.pjc". Double-click on it (or click on it and then click the "Open" button). A small window appears telling you to select the NEW project location and name. Click on the OK button.
- In the sub-window labeled "Create a Project", type "RUG2010" in the Filename box and then click on the "Open" button. When the copy is complete, you will see a small window indicating "The project has been successfully copied."
You are now ready to work with an initial copy of the Sample project but it is now named RUG2010.
Use this when you bring your laptop to RUG meetings. We will be
updating this project each month that we go through a chapter of Terry Reigel's book.
